John Alexander Compton

John Alexander Compton was born 22 May 1766 in Charles Co., MD to William Clark Compton & Elizabeth Elgin. He married in Culpeper Co., VA about 1787, Dorcas Clark (born 1768 in Culpeper Co., died 14 March 1853 in Franklin Co., VA). He died in Warren Co., VA in November 1840. (Lawler*)

In the Name of God Amen I, John Compton of the County of Warren and State of Virginia Considering the uncertainity of this mortal life and being of sound and discerning mind do hereby make and publish this my last Will and Testament, in manner & form following that of to Day, First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife, Dorcas, one third part of my whole estate, or so much that as she may think sufficient for her support, I also further Will and desire that my wife may have her choice of the slaves, as ___________ of some other property as she may think necessary for her to have to amount of her third pat of the whole to have and to hold during her natural life, the residue of my estate I will and desire shall be equally divided among my children viz Peggy C White late Peggy C. Compton, William C. Compton, Linna G. Haddox late Linna G. Compton, Elizabeth E. Ridings late Elizabeth E. Compton, Elias E. Compton, John A. Compton and Mary Ann C. Hackley late Mary Ann C. Compton.  In as much as there are some of my daughters who have married men with children, and thinking it my duty not to make a difference with any, my will is that to all my daughters their full part of my whole estate including their interest their mothers part shall be second to them and their bodily hair(sic) with its increase forever.  I further will and devise that a distribution and settlement of my estate be made so soon as practicable after my demise and I hereby appoint William C. Compton, John A. Compton and John R. Haddox my sole Executors to this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all former wills by me made In testimony whereof I hereunto set my hand and seal this Thirteenth day of May one thousand eight hundred and forty.

At a court held for the County of Warren on Thursday the 26th day of November 1840.  The Last Will and Testament of John Compton dcd. was produced in court and proved by the the oaths of John H. Wood and James A. Compton testifying thus and ordered to be recorded as the Last will and Testament of the said John Compton dcd. and on the motion of William C. Compton, John A. Compton and John R. Haddox the Executors named in said will who came forward(?) and entered into Bond with Edmond B. Jonah, John B. Prty(?) and Piny(?) Compton, John A. Compton and John R. Haddox Executors on the Estate of John Compton decd. as far as they have progressed in the administration of the same by which it will be seen that a balance is against them of $1298.01 which balance I think it proper to state consists principally of purchases made by the heirs at the sale and property purchased at sale and taken at appraised value by the Widow whose accounts they are not at this time prepared to settle (they not being present) for which reason I have not made any Interest account.  Given under my hand this 31 day of October 1842.   /s/  Robt.
